MIMO has just turned 20 years old since its invention. Although it is and will be widely adopted in 4G LTE and 5G NR networks, are we still yet to leverage the potential of MIMO to the full extent? On the other hand, has it already reached its peak? Will it simply continue being a complementary tool trailing behind densification and wider spectral bands in popularity as the mobile networks evolve? In what ways and direction will MIMO evolve?

Compared to the major breakthroughs in the development of MIMO for the last 20 years, this dissertation simply attempts to understand the role of MIMO in today’s and tomorrow’s cellular networks.
