This dissertation tackles the design of an efficient channel state information (CSI) feedback from a receiver required by a transmitter to improve spectral efficiency of the MIMO wireless link. The CSI feedback can be described as a smooth curved space (a manifold), which can be quantized, and the quantized points can be further interpolated using straight lines. Straight lines between quantized points on a manifold are called geodesics and are useful not only for the efficient CSI feedback design, but also to improve the channel estimation performance at the receiver. Furthermore, the dissertation discusses how the manifold theory and geodesic interpolation can be applied to 3GPP LTE wireless standard, and proposes the tailored feedback schemes for 3GPP LTE technologies, such as single-user MIMO, multi-user MIMO and coordinated multi-point (CoMP).
