In recent years, the services that utilize the positions of network devices have become a key component of wireless systems. A wide range of location-aware applications have emerged, including autonomous driving and robotics, location-based advertisement, social networking, crowd sensing, smart cities, assisted living, Internet of things (IoT), and emergency services. However, conventional techniques such as global positioning system (GPS) may not be available in indoor environments. Furthermore, geometrical models and maps of the indoor environment are vital to indoor localization, robot navigation, and first responders in emergency services, for example.

The goal of this dissertation is to develop new methods and theory for indoor localization and mapping. The performance of wireless localization is improved by exploiting different measurement modalities, cooperation among network devices, and propagation characteristics of radio signals. High accuracy delay estimation and time synchronization methods are proposed to further aid with the localization task. In order to create maps of indoor environments, specular radio wave reflections are exploited.  The developed algorithms for synchronization, localization and mapping facilitate high accuracy location-based services.
