The inner-ear transforms sound into neural pulses traveling to the brain. This transformation critically determines how we perceive sound, and therefore our ability to communicate and enjoy music. Consequently, it is a top priority for hearing and brain scientists to understand precisely how the different biological components of the inner ear affect the way sound is translated into neural activity.

Unfortunately, there are many practical and theoretical obstacles that make this task very difficult. Further, the complexity of the inner-ear renders hard to interpret the mechanisms behind well-known phenomena.

The present PhD work tackle these problems by using mathematical and computational tools to combine and interpret results of different experiments, in order to shed light on aspects of the inner-ear functioning that cannot be directly observed.
