About the department

The Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics unifies a combination of research fields varying from ICT related technology to core electrical engineering and its basic phenomena.  Research and teaching at SPA focus on understanding of the theoretical limits and fundamentals of these phenomena and their related technologies.

SPA is responsible for teaching of signal processing, audio technology and communication acoustics, speech technology, measurement technology and digital technology. The courses given are mainly on master’s level.  

The total personnel is about 100 with 8 tenured professors and 2 fixed term professors at assistant and associate levels, in addition docent level researchers having their own funding packages from the Academy of Finland and European Union work within the department.  The personnel of the groups consist of a balanced and dynamic combination of postdoctoral researchers, post-graduate students working on their doctoral thesis and master thesis workers. The groups are active in employing international members both as post-graduate students and as post doctoral researchers.
